Information system of the abiotic component of the environment of the city of Bratislava – Part 1: Design and completion of monitoring

Collected archival and newly acquired data on the abiotic component of the environment in the urban agglomeration of Bratislava will be inserted into a newly structured database after a thorough analysis; design and creation of an information system, creation of geological and hydrogeological models, interpretation and presentation to the public of information on the state of the abiotic component of the environment in Bratislava, focusing mainly on groundwater and the rock environment; updating of the monitoring network, addition of monitoring wells in places with insufficient data. On the basis of the defined requirements and criteria, it will be possible to select the elements that will form a special-purpose spatial geological database as one of the spatial-technical bases for the analysis of the state of the landscape environment.

Geological map of the region of the Danube Lowland – north-eastern part

The aim is to gain new knowledge about the abiotic component of the environment of the north-eastern part of the Danube Lowlands using new knowledge about the fossil biotic component. The information will be obtained mainly by field geological research, laboratory processing of collected samples. The output will be a basic geological map to which textual explanatory notes will be prepared.

Update of the digital geological map and geological research in problematic areas of the Slovak Republic – Database of deep boreholes of the Slovak Republic

It will contain basic information on the location, lithology and stratigraphy, structures, hydrogeological conditions, mineral resources and exceptional results obtained from drilling and evaluation of drilling material.

DHV will be compatible and interconnected with the existing databases of the State Geological Institute Dionýz Štúr and applicable for the needs of the state administration.

Drilling data results in tabular, textual and visualised form will be viewable via a web browser with accompanying data on published drilling results.

Geological map of the Orava Magura region at a scale of 1 : 50 000

On the basis of field geological mapping, map sheets at a scale of 1 : 25 000 and a map of the region at a scale of 1 : 50 000 with textual explanatory notes to the map are compiled. The aim is to compile basic geological maps at a scale of 1 : 25 000 and a geological map at a scale of 1 : 50 000 with textual explanatory notes. The map takes into account the results of new geological mapping, reambulation and supporting special work. The map will be part of a set of geological maps of the Slovak Republic compiled at this scale.

Resistance of water sources in gravity-drained aquifers to hydrological drought

Water resources in gravity-drained aquifers represent the most accessible and least energy-cost component of water resources. However, in periods of prolonged drought, such as the one that affected the Slovak Republic during the summer half of 2022, they respond differently to the decline in usable quantities. The task will focus on assessing the permanent availability of usable groundwater quantities through statistical evaluation of monitored parameters and the establishment of discharge lines, as well as defining the relationship between the drained rock environment and the stability of the yield. The output will be a map of aquifers with the greatest stability of circulation of naturally gravity-drained groundwater for the most prospective locations for gravity groundwater use.

Noble minerals and rocks as part of the mineral wealth of the Slovak Republic

The aim is to elaborate the existing and newly acquired knowledge about noble minerals and rocks, especially opal and sapphire from the territory of the Slovak Republic. The main reason for this is the identification of new localities, known either from more recent literature or as oral information. Some of the localities are not officially registered, which may lead to illegal “mining”. All data will be included in the newly created clear GIS.

Assessment of the chemical status of the groundwater of the Rye Island

Assessment of the influence of selected factors on the evaluation of the chemical status of groundwater in terms of comprehensive use of available information in the area with emphasis on the area of groundwater input to the upper part of the Rye Island (below Bratislava) in the scope of regional geological research. Assessment of groundwater pollution problems of the Rye Island on the basis of hydrogeological and geochemical processes. Evaluation of temporal and spatial changes in the contents of selected pollutants in selected points of the groundwater monitoring network related to the area and the factors under investigation. Assessment of the impact of environmental burdens and polluted areas on groundwater quality from different aspects related to the geological, hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical conditions of the area. Proposal for a method of communicating and using the results to the public.

Analysis of the possibilities of sustainable use and exploitation of geothermal energy resources in Slovakia – Part I

The objective of Part 1 is a regional hydrogeothermal assessment of the sustainable capacity of geothermal energy resources and reserves, unification of the estimation methodology and simulation of geothermal energy resources and reserves, with subsequent estimation of the sustainable capacity of geothermal energy production at the level of geothermal water bodies or sub-structures using principles derived from the reserve capacity factor. The monitoring of the sustainable capacity is focused on the energy balance of geothermal energy resources, with the identification of prospective or critical formations or substructures in Slovakia.

Development of new technologies for remediation of environmental burdens

Development and testing of effective approaches for the removal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at the Strážske site. The aim is to apply PCB degradation methods tested under laboratory conditions to a larger volume of contaminated material in situ. They are based on a combination of physicochemical and biological degradation of PCBs, with the physicochemical methods applying the mechanism of adsorption and reduction, while the biological degradation involves the breakdown of the PCB molecule mediated by bacterial metabolism.- Development and testing of advanced methods for remediation of soils, waters and sediments contaminated with selected potentially toxic elements by using natural and waste (nano) materials at selected sites.

Analysis of the effects of climate change and human activity on the genesis of slope deformation – model site Hradisko Zámčisko near Unín

The aim is to decipher the climatic record from the Pleistocene/Holocene break to the present day and to analyse the influence of climate change on the genesis of the slope deformation in the pilot area of the Hradisko Zámčisko slope deformation near Unín by using proven dating methods (AMS 14C, OSL, palynology) and to analyse the influence of climate change on the genesis of the slope deformation. Based on the results, develop a methodology for dating the evolution of slope deformation under Western Carpathian conditions, which will provide a comprehensive spatiotemporal view of climatic change and associated palaeoenvironmental changes in sediment traps within landslide areas.
