According to the principles of the UNESCO organization, a geopark represents an area with significant geological phenomena that are characterized by uniqueness, scientific value or extraordinary aesthetic appeal. All these phenomena are presented in the context of the geological history and development of the landscape.

⛰️ What makes this region exceptional?

The attractiveness of the area combines natural sciences with history and culture:

  • Diverse geological structure: It has created a diverse relief and unique natural scenery in the vicinity of Banská Bystrica.

  • 🔨 Mountain (mining) monuments: The rich history of mineral extraction has left the country with preserved shafts, smelters, galleries and historical sluice gates.

  • 🧵 Ethnographic value: The region is known for its preserved folk architecture and world-famous tradition Spanish lace.

  • 🥾 Active recreation: An extensive network of tourist and educational trails runs through the territory, complemented by rich local flora and fauna.

📂 Structure of the site database

Information is collected in a database that also contains sites protected under Act No. 543/2002 Coll. on Nature and Landscape Protection. The data for each location is clearly divided into:

  1. General information and description of the site.

  2. Geological characteristics and protection of the area.

  3. Graphic documentation (photographs, maps).

  4. References and data on record processing.
