This final part of the Geochemical Atlas of Slovakia, on which the State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr (SGIDŠ) worked in 2008-2014, brings a comprehensive hydrogeochemical mapping and interpretation of the spatial distribution of chemical elements and components in our surface waters.

🔬 Methodology and strict database criteria

The basis for compiling the atlas was 10,960 chemical analyses. The statistical coverage density of the territory of the Slovak Republic is approximately 4.6 samples per 1 km² (depending on the density of the river network). In order for a sample to be included in the final database, it had to meet three strict conditions:

  1. Completeness: Complete chemical analysis of the main components.

  2. Accuracy: The analysis error was not allowed to exceed 5%.

  3. Localization: Precise geodetic determination of the sampling location.

📊 Cartographic processing and map types

The distribution of monitored parameters is shown using two types of maps:

1. Area maps

They are compiled only for elements where less than 30% of the values ​​lie below the limit of determination and areal uniformity of coverage is ensured.

  • Visual traffic light principle: The color scale is created based on percentiles – from the lowest concentrations (blue color) to the highest values ​​(red color).

  • Monitored parameters: Ammonium, potassium, nitrates, fluorides, phosphates, aluminum, magnesium, bicarbonates, chemical oxygen demand, chlorides, manganese, total mineralization, pH, sulfates, sodium, water hardness, calcium, conductivity, zinc and iron.

2. Point maps

They occur in cases where the data do not meet the criteria for area modeling. They express the concentration directly at the sampling point, with the size of the dot representing the respective concentration interval.

  • Monitored parameters: Arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, lithium, dissolved oxygen, lead, antimony, selenium, silicon dioxide and strontium.
