This module represents a unique integration of geosciences and forestry research. Mapping the chemical composition of the assimilatory organs of forest tree species (needles and leaves) began as early as 1965 with the aim of uncovering the causes of forest decline. The atlas helps us understand the relationship between the subsurface (rocks, soil) and living nature and reliably identify anomalies caused by industrial emissions.
🔬 Methodology and Sampling Network

The atlas was based on samples from 3,062 sampling sites.

The baseline survey was conducted using a regular 4 x 4 km grid.

In heavily trafficked industrial areas, the network was expanded to a granular 1 x 1 km grid.

All collected data are archived long-term in an organized database maintained by the National Forestry Center (LVÚ Zvolen).
🗺️ Cartographic projection (10-point scale)
A 10-level color scale (ranging from blue through yellow to red, with increasing concentration) was chosen to represent the distribution of the elements. A total of 26 elements were monitored:
Al, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, S, Se, Sr, V, and Zn.
🎯 Special attention is given to critical areas:
Industrial hubs: Upper Nitra, Žiarska Basin, Košice Metropolitan Area, Lubeník–Jelšava, Central Spiš.
Military Districts: Lešť Military Area.
Mountain ecosystems: Low Tatras (south and north), High Tatras, Western Tatras, Kysuce, and Orava.
