Natural hazards in Slovakia claim human lives almost every year and cause material damage worth hundreds of millions of euros. The State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr (SGIDŠ), as an organization entrusted with the performance of the state geological service, actively contributes to reducing the vulnerability of the population and the stability of the territory.

Within the framework of cross-cutting cooperation with all sectors of society and local governments, the institute provides verified professional information, mapping services and knowledge about risk factors of the geological environment. The development of this portal was one of the key objectives of the national project GeoIS.

⚠️ Types of natural hazards monitored in Slovakia

The application integrates map layers and databases for the following critical phenomena that threaten infrastructure and residents:

  • Slope deformations: Landslides, rock falls and mudflows.

  • Dynamic processes: Erosion processes of soil and rocks, active neotectonic movements.

  • Seismic activity: Earthquakes and their local effects.

  • Geochemical and structural risks: Radon risk arising from the geological subsoil and adverse volumetric changes of rocks (shrinkage and swelling).

  • Environmental pressures: Karst processes (slumps) and land subsidence due to historical or current mining activities.
