It captures the main tectonic units and selected elements of the geological structure, paying special attention to the division of the sedimentary cover of the platforms according to their age.
Geological development and position of Slovakia
The territory of Slovakia is an integral part of the complex European geological system:

Alpine orogenic belt: Slovakia is located in its northern branch. The main development and formation of this zone occurred in the Mesozoic and Tertiary periods.

Older foundations: However, this entire young orogenic zone was formed on the foundations of significantly older structures – specifically the Caledonian and Variscan (Hercynian) orogens, which were originally formed in the southern part of the European continent.

Incorporation of structures: Parts of these ancient mountain ranges were later absorbed and reshaped by the younger Alpine orogeny. Today, they form deep foundations and a significant part of the diverse geological structure of the Western Carpathians.
