Natural radiation from the geological subsurface accounts for a significant portion of the population’s total radiation exposure. The fourth volume of the Geochemical Atlas of Slovakia series is therefore devoted to the issue of natural radioactivity in rocks and water and the associated radon risk. The aim of this work is to provide comprehensive, clear information and an objective basis for assessing radioactivity as a key environmental geofactor.
🌐 Integrated Data Sources (Declassification)
The overview maps of radioactivity in the Slovak Republic were created by synthesizing extensive archival materials and in situ measurements at finer scales (1:200,000 and 1:50,000). Key sources included:

Historical Surveys: Data from URANPRES, s.r.o., Spišská Nová Ves, and its predecessors, collected over more than half a century of surveys of radioactive raw materials in Slovakia, which were previously classified.

Pioneering works: Materials by Prof. M. Matolín, who compiled the first map of natural radioactivity in the Western Carpathians as early as 1976.

Institutional Cooperation: Measurement results from the Geological Survey of the Slovak Republic (now ŠGÚDŠ) and other partner organizations.
⚠️ Note on map scale: Due to the broad scale of 1 : 1,000,000, the map outputs cannot capture local or partial anomalies. However, the accompanying text provides detailed information on the specific occurrence and spatial distribution of rocks and water with elevated radioactivity.
