INSPIRE – INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe is an initiative of the European Commission. The Directive came into force in 2007 with a view to creating the European legislative framework needed to build a European spatial information infrastructure. It lays down general rules for the construction of this infrastructure, in particular to support environmental and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment. The main objective of INSPIRE is to ensure that a large amount of quality and standardized spatial information is made available at Community level and at all levels of the Member States.
