Events on the Occasion of 120th Anniversary of Dionýz Štúr decease

     On the occasion of 120th Anniversary of Dionýz Štúr decease was organized a conference whereby the Austrian and Slovak scientific community reminded the heritage of Dionýz Štúr, the distinguished scientist of the 19th century. Dionýz Štúr left behind the work extraordinary in respect of its scope and content that enrolled him into the history of European science not only as a scientist-geologist, palaeontologist, botanist, but also as a politician, nationalist and poet. Very significant is bequest of Dionýz Štúr as knowledgeable operative officer at position of the third Director of the Imperial Geological Institute in Vienna.
     The State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr (ŠGÚDŠ) has been honoured to organise on the occasion of 120th Anniversary of Dionýz Štúr decease the Conference, which felt symbolically to the October 9th, the name of Dionýz and the date of the 60th Anniversary of the Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr building opening.
     The Program of the Conference was dedicated to the heritage of Dionýz Štúr. The contributions concerned the topics connected with his contribution to the natural sciences as a scientist-geologist of the European importance, professional activities of Dionýz Štúr as the Director of the Imperial Geological Institute, social and political dimension of Dionýz Štúr activities, the contribution of Dionýz Štúr to geo-scientific disciplines (subdivision of the Alpine Triassic, the Alpine-Carpathian System), Dionýz Štúr and his Museum in Banská Štiavnica. The contributions were presented by representatives of the Austrian scientific bodies – the Federal Geological Survey in Vienna (GBA), University of Vienna; from the Slovak part the representatives of the State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr, the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Science and the Mining Museum in Banská Štiavnica. The conference was followed by unveiling of commemorative plaque with the bust on the Institute’s facade and opening the Geo-park situated in the premises of ŠGÚDŠ.
     In the evening, a ceremonial reception with participation of foreign guests was held at hotel Bôrik. Reception was honoured by presence of representatives of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Mining Chamber, the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University, the Slovak Academy of Science, Slovak Hydro Meteorological Institute as well as the seniors of Slovak geology. During the reception, the appraise ceremony took place. The Head of the Office of the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic awarded the price of Dionýz Štúr in the collective category to GBA for long-time scientific and research cooperation and within the category of personalities to RNDr. Oto Miko, CSc. for his extraordinary contribution to the work and personality of Dionýz Štúr, the important Slovak geologist of European importance, and his life-work scientific results and popularization of geology.
     The commemorative event has continued the second day in Austria, Vienna, where on the Evangelistic cemetery next to Matzleinersdorf station was revealed a monument that ŠGÚDŠ devoted to Dionýz Štúr. On the same day, in the building of GBA in Vienna was unveiled the tablet of Dionýz Štúr.
